How a Warped Washing Machine Drum Can Cause Serious Damage

A washing machine drum is built to spin thousands of times during its lifetime. When everything is working correctly, the drum should rotate smoothly, quietly and evenly.

However, if the drum becomes warped, bent or damaged, it can cause much more than a noisy washing machine. A distorted drum can put excessive strain on several important components and, if left unchecked, can eventually turn a relatively simple repair into a much more expensive one.

What causes a washing machine drum to become warped?

There are several reasons why a drum can become distorted or damaged.

Overloading the washing machine

One of the most common causes is repeatedly overloading the machine.

Putting too much laundry inside the drum increases the weight placed on the bearings, suspension and drum assembly. Heavy items such as towels, bedding and rugs can be particularly demanding.

Over time, excessive loads can contribute to components becoming worn or damaged, potentially causing the drum to run out of alignment.

Foreign objects inside the drum

Coins, bra wires, screws, zips and other objects can become trapped between the inner drum and the outer tub.

A foreign object can scrape against the drum, become lodged in the machine or cause physical damage while the drum is spinning.

Worn bearings

Drum bearings allow the washing machine drum to rotate smoothly.

When bearings start to fail, the drum can develop excessive movement. You may notice a loud rumbling noise during the spin cycle or be able to move the drum up and down by hand.

If the machine continues to operate with badly worn bearings, the additional movement can place stress on other components.

Damaged suspension

The washing machine's suspension system is designed to control the movement of the drum during washing and spinning.

If a spring, damper or other suspension component fails, the drum can move excessively. This can result in violent shaking and banging, particularly during high-speed spin cycles.

What damage can a warped drum cause?

The drum itself isn't necessarily the only problem.

A drum that isn't rotating correctly can place additional stress on several other components.

1. Drum bearings

A damaged or misaligned drum can put significant additional strain on the bearings.

Once the bearings deteriorate, the washing machine can become extremely noisy during spinning.

In severe cases, continued use can cause further damage to the drum assembly.

2. Spider assembly

Many washing machines use a component known as a drum spider to support the inner drum.

The spider can crack or corrode, particularly on older machines. When this happens, the drum can become unstable and start moving incorrectly.

A damaged spider can sometimes be mistaken for a simple bearing or suspension problem.

3. Door seal

If the drum isn't running correctly, it can come into contact with or put excessive pressure on the rubber door seal.

This can eventually cause the seal to become worn, damaged or torn, potentially resulting in water leaking from the front of the machine.

4. Outer tub

A severely damaged or misaligned drum can make contact with the outer tub.

This can create scraping or banging noises and, in serious cases, damage the tub itself.

Unfortunately, damage to the outer tub can be one of the more expensive washing machine repairs.

5. Motor and drive system

The motor has to work harder when the drum isn't rotating correctly.

Excessive resistance or an unbalanced drum can put additional stress on the motor, belt and pulley system.

What starts as a mechanical problem can therefore develop into several component failures.

6. Electrical components

Severe vibration can also affect electrical connections and wiring inside the appliance.

While a warped drum doesn't directly mean that an electrical fault will occur, excessive movement over a prolonged period can contribute to connections becoming loose or components being damaged.

What are the warning signs?

Don't ignore these symptoms if your washing machine starts behaving differently.

Look out for:

• Loud rumbling during the spin cycle

• Banging or knocking noises

• The machine moving across the floor

• Excessive vibration

• The drum appearing lower or off-centre

• Scraping noises when turning the drum

• The drum feeling loose

• Water leaking from the door

• Clothes becoming damaged

• The machine struggling to reach full spin speed

A washing machine doesn't necessarily need to make a huge amount of noise before something is wrong.

If you notice a change in the way your appliance sounds or behaves, it's worth getting it checked.

Can you still use a washing machine with a damaged drum?

Technically, the machine may continue to operate, but that doesn't mean you should keep using it.

If the drum is severely misaligned, loose or making contact with other components, every additional wash can potentially increase the damage.

Continuing to use the appliance could turn a repair involving one component into a repair involving the drum, bearings, spider, seal, tub or drive system.

That's why getting the problem diagnosed early can potentially save you money.

Don't ignore unusual noises

One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is assuming that a noisy washing machine is simply "getting old".

Some noises are completely normal. Others are an early warning that something is failing.

If your washing machine has suddenly started making a loud rumbling, grinding, banging or scraping noise, don't simply turn the volume up on the TV and hope it goes away!
